Samsung Display’s 13-inch stretchable AMOLED display has arrived...

On September 10, Samsung Display unveiled its stretchable OLED panel technology at the 2021 Korea Global Technology Conference.

This isn’t the first time a company has showcased a stretchable OLED display, but Samsung Display appears to have taken this technology to an entirely new level. A few months ago, SAIT demonstrated stretchable display technology for small wrist‑mounted heart‑rate monitors; that display looked rather rudimentary, consisting of just a handful of pixels and unable to render high‑resolution images due to its extremely limited pixel count. By contrast, the stretchable OLED panel Samsung unveiled earlier today looks every bit like a conventional display.

According to reports, the video shows a flowing lava sequence displayed on this stretchable screen, while the hardware concealed behind the stretchable OLED panel pushes the screen surface outward—effectively adding a third dimension to what was originally a two-dimensional display.

At present, this type of technology may not be well-suited for conventional smartphones or tablets, but Samsung has developed a wide range of display‑based products, from panels for mobile devices to the world’s largest LED video walls and digital waterfalls. The company has also created an alternative to green screens for filmmakers. With that in mind, Samsung and its many display‑related customers have undoubtedly already envisioned multiple applications for this new technology—so it’s worth anticipating the fields in which it will be deployed.
