BOE is ramping up production of 15-inch OLED panels!

Recently, according to the Korean website The Elec, BOE has repurposed the third-phase production line at its Chongqing B12 plant for smartphone, IT, and automotive OLED applications, in order to meet the growing demand for mobile-device panels.

Initially, the third production line was designed to manufacture sixth-generation (1500x1850 mm) flexible organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, typically used in smartphones, just like the existing first and second production lines.

According to reports, BOE is preparing to produce 15-inch OLED panels on the Phase III production line of its redesigned B12 facility. Additionally, this Phase III line incorporates a two-stack tandem structure, which extends product lifespan by stacking two OLED emissive layers.

Notably, according to official information from BOE, on December 28 last year, the Chongqing Gen-6 AMOLED (flexible) production line—built with an investment of RMB 46.5 billion—held a mass-production and customer-delivery ceremony, officially announcing the start of mass production.

Currently, BOE has established six major projects in Chongqing, including a Gen-6 AMOLED (flexible) production line, an 8.5-generation TFT‑LCD production line, and the BOE Chongqing Smart Systems Innovation Center, with cumulative investments exceeding RMB 86 billion.

Combined with recent reports from foreign media, and influenced by a variety of factors, BOE is expected to supply OLED panels for Apple’s new iPad models this year. Previously, panel supplies for Apple’s mobile devices were largely concentrated among South Korean giants Samsung and LG; however, amid the pandemic and mounting production‑capacity challenges at these suppliers, Apple may well entrust BOE with manufacturing panels for some of its upcoming iPad models.

However, for now, this is only speculation from foreign media; neither Apple nor BOE has yet issued an official statement clarifying the situation. OLED panels have long been dominated by South Korean companies, but if BOE does indeed secure the iPad panel order as rumored, it could soon compete on equal footing with Samsung, LG, and others. In any case, the iPad has always been synonymous with tablets, setting the industry standard in both performance and user experience. As the year draws to a close, the 2021 iPad and iPad Pro are readily available at stable prices, making them worth considering.
