Will Micro OLED “Seize” the Metaverse’s Entry Point?
According to CINNO Research, Samsung is accelerating the development of “self-emissive quantum dots (EL‑QD, or electroluminescence quantum dots),” often referred to as “true quantum dots,” in order to establish an absolute competitive edge in the display sector. The company plans to pool the resources of its affiliated entities to commercialize this EL‑QD technology—capable of reshaping the high-end panel market dominated by OLEDs—within a few years. As Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong has emphasized, technology remains paramount, making the development of EL‑QD all the more urgent.
Samsung Display is accelerating the development of self-emissive quantum dot (EL-QD) technology.
According to CINNO Research, the microdisplay market has experienced significant growth in recent years, driven primarily by the expansion of applications such as virtual reality headsets and electronic viewfinders. Currently, organic light‑emitting diode (OLED) technology remains the dominant choice in these markets. However, with the emergence of new demand—particularly for augmented reality smart glasses—the industry is increasingly seeking microdisplays with higher brightness levels. This trend is spurring greater adoption of monolithic Micro‑LED microdisplay devices, which offer ultra‑high brightness and exceptional durability.
Toyota Gosei has developed a new semiconductor process and method that enables the low-cost production of Micro-LED displays.
LG Display stated today that, for eighth-generation IT‑grade OLEDs, the company plans to adopt a cautious approach until the market provides clear signals.

The liquid crystal display (LCD) panel industry originated in Japan, which dominated the global panel market throughout the 1990s, licensing its technology to regions such as Taiwan and South Korea. Japan’s Sharp was even dubbed “the Sharp of LCDs.” In recent years, mainland Chinese panel manufacturers, leveraging their financial strength and favorable government policies, have expanded production capacity and investment, sweeping the global panel industry.
Which overseas companies exited the LCD panel market in 2024?
Recently, according to a market survey conducted by the Yano Research Institute, a global study of the polarizing film and related material markets for the second half of 2024 indicates that global production of polarizing films is expected to reach 612,150,000 square meters (612.15 million m²) in 2025, representing a 3.0% increase compared with the previous year.
The global polarizer market is projected to exceed 600 million square meters by 2025.
