Samsung Display is researching blue phosphorescent OLED materials.

Recent reports indicate that, according to a South Korean professor, Samsung Display is developing blue phosphorescent OLED materials for quantum-dot (QD)-OLED panels.

According to South Korean media outlet The Elec, Professor Kwon Jang-hyuk of Kyung Hee University stated at the “SID 2022 Review Symposium” that “Samsung Display appears to be prioritizing the integration of blue phosphorescent OLED materials into its latest TV panels.”

According to reports, display manufacturers and materials companies such as UDC are researching phosphorescent OLED materials to extend the lifespan of OLED panels.

Currently, OLED panels used in televisions and smartphones employ red and green phosphorescent OLED materials with 100% internal quantum efficiency, whereas blue fluorescent materials have an internal quantum efficiency of only about 25%.

The report notes that Samsung Display’s current QD-OLED panels employ blue fluorescent OLED materials and green phosphorescent OLED materials as the emissive layers. By switching to blue phosphorescent OLED materials, Samsung Display could reduce the number of blue layers to a single layer, thereby extending the lifespan of the OLED panel.

In February this year, Samsung Display published a paper titled “Exceptionally Stable Blue Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes” in the journal Nature Photonics. Kwon Jang-hyuk stated: “This research was completed more than a year ago, and Samsung Display may have already developed blue phosphorescent OLED materials. The company aims to achieve tangible research results within the year.”

Phosphorescent OLED materials can harness both singlet and triplet exciton energies, which account for 25% and 75% of the total energy consumed by the material, respectively, thereby achieving 100% internal quantum efficiency.

In contrast, phosphorescent OLED materials can only utilize energy from singlet excitons, resulting in a luminous efficiency of 25%, which is why Samsung’s displays require a three-layer blue emissive structure in their QD-OLED panels.

To this end, the U.S. OLED company UDC announced as early as February that its goal is to commercialize phosphorescent blue OLED materials by 2024.
